Traditional Wedding Cakes

There is a lot of history behind the origins of the wedding cake. It has been present at wedding ceremonies for centuries and was originally a luxury item, and a sign of celebration and social status. Wedding cakes in England, America and the Caribbean were traditionally fruit cakes, often topped with marzipan and icing with tiers. White icing was also a symbol of money and social importance in Victorian times, so a white cake was highly desired. Wedding Cakes today are of many flavours and configurations and colours to complement the Wedding’s theme. Cutting the wedding cake was an important part of the reception. Traditionally the bottom tier of the cake was cut and served at the ceremony. The top tier was saved for the first child's christening. The middle tier after the wedding was given as a thank you to the guests. Some of these traditions and still followed today. Feel free to post your Wedding cake throwbacks or stories below.
